We all know how important it is when we find ways to connect to nature… a walk through the forest, a hike to a mountaintop, taking in a sunset or standing in front of the ocean. It always calibrates my mind, body, and spirit when I get out of the house or office and spend time in nature!

It’s easy to feel disconnected from nature in our fast-paced, technology-driven world. One simple practice can help us reconnect and reap numerous health benefits: Grounding, also known as earthing. Grounding involves placing your bare feet directly on the earth, whether it’s grass, soil, or sand. This practice can improve mental and physical well-being. Let’s explore the benefits of grounding and why you should consider incorporating it into your daily routine.

1. Reduces Inflammation

One of the most significant benefits of grounding is its ability to reduce inflammation in the body. When we make direct contact with the earth, we absorb electrons that act as antioxidants. These electrons help neutralize free radicals, which are responsible for inflammation and various chronic diseases. By grounding regularly, you can help your body combat inflammation naturally.

2. Improves Sleep Quality

Many people struggle with sleep issues, whether its difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking up feeling rested. Grounding has been shown to improve sleep quality by regulating the body’s circadian rhythm. The earth’s natural energy helps to reset our internal clocks, leading to more restful and restorative sleep. Whenever I notice I’m having trouble sleeping (which usually involves waking up at 3:00 and not being able to fall back asleep) I start adding this ritual to my daily routine again. It’s easy to get out of the habit but my body quickly reminds me why I need it.

3. Enhances Mood and Reduces Stress

Grounding can have a profound impact on our mental health. Studies have shown that spending time in nature and making direct contact with the earth can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. The act of grounding helps to calm the nervous system, lower cortisol levels, and promote a sense of peace and well-being. It’s a simple yet powerful way to boost your mood and mental clarity. I joke that being from West Virginia, I come by the title “barefoot girl” quite naturally! I love being barefoot inside and outside! That’s played a huge role in keeping my moods regulated and my Spirit happy!

4. Boosts Immune Function

Who doesn’t need a boost in their immune system? Our immune system is our body’s defense against illness and infection. Grounding can help strengthen the immune system by reducing inflammation and promoting better sleep. When our bodies are well-rested and free from chronic inflammation, our immune system can function more effectively, keeping us healthier overall. Okay, so it’s a secondary benefit, but I’ll take it!

5. Increases Energy Levels

Feeling sluggish and fatigued? Grounding might be the answer. By connecting with the earth’s natural energy, we can recharge our bodies and increase our energy levels. Many people report feeling more energized and revitalized after spending time grounding, making it an excellent practice for combating fatigue and enhancing overall vitality. How? Let me give you a deeper explanation: The Earth has a negative charge, and when you make direct contact with it, free electrons from the Earth are transferred into your body. These electrons act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and reducing inflammation, which can lead to increased energy levels.

How to Get Started with Grounding

Incorporating grounding into your daily routine is simple and doesn’t require any special equipment. That’s why it’s one of my favorite self-care recommendations! Almost EVERYONE can do it! If you live in the heart of NYC, you might have to travel to a nearby park, but for most of us a grassy area is right outside our front door!

Ready to try grounding for yourself? Here are a few ways to get started:

Walk Barefoot: Spend at least 20-30 minutes each day walking barefoot on grass, soil, or sand. Some people cringe to consider this, but when you weigh the benefits of earthing, it makes sense! Try it!

Sit or Lie Down: Find a comfortable spot outdoors and sit or lie down with your bare feet touching the ground. Its okay to toss a blanket on the lawn, you’ll still get the benefits of the earth’s electrons!

Immerse in Water: Any time you can immerse in a natural body of water, you are in touch with Mother Earth! It’s a beautiful and cleansing experience that gives you all the same benefits of putting your bare feet on the ground!

Use Grounding Products: If you can’t get outside, consider using grounding mats or sheets that simulate the effects of direct contact with the earth. I’ve never used them, but they’re out there! My recommendation is to just go outside and connect with nature. If you can, let your feet touch the cool soil and rich green grass and spend 5 minutes breathing in the moment!

Give it a try and experience the benefits for yourself!
